Announcing Changes at the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund!

The changes being shared now are ones that have been made over several years of work and the result of many conversations internally and externally within Waterloo Region, intended to move Region of Waterloo Arts Fund towards being a more equitable funder to all Artists within the region.

The Arts Fund was started 20 years ago and in that time has facilitated over $4,000,000 in grants to Artists within the region. Towards the end of 2021, the RWAF Board of Directors began a process to initiate an equity, diversity and inclusion needs assessment. As a result of this process, two milestone changes will be happening - changes to the Board of Directors and a pause for the Fall 2023 round of funding. As the new Board of Directors transitions into leading the Arts Fund towards being more equitable, we will be pausing the Fall 2023 round of funding to audit the existing funding process and to connect with Artists within the region.

We are committed to communicating updates about ongoing changes by November 1, 2023. We acknowledge that while the next few months at the Arts Fund are unclear, we are confident we will emerge with a strong action plan grounded in relationships within the region.

WHICH FUNDING ROUND?

Deciding which round of grants to apply for depends on when your project will take place.

The Board policy does not permit retroactive funding of projects. If your project happens before the granting decision date, the application will be ineligible. Since projects must happen within 12 months of receiving a grant, timing the application to an earlier round ensures that the deadline criteria is met.

If your project will take place between January 1 and December 30, apply for the Fall round of the preceding year (October deadline).

If your project will take place between July 1 and the following June 30, apply for the Spring round of the current year (May deadline).

FOR EXAMPLE:

Tony is writing and directing a play that will have its first performance in July 2023. He must submit his completed application for the Spring 2023 round, due May 5, 2023.

Maria is applying for funding for a choral performance that will take place in April 2023. She must submit her completed application for the Fall 2022 round, due October 13, 2022.
